Choosing a compliant, reputable umbrella company is one of the most important decisions a contractor can make. With hundreds of umbrella companies operating in the UK, many of questionable compliance, this guide focuses on accredited providers with a strong track record. We do not recommend any non-accredited schemes.
The Freelancer and Contractor Services Association (FCSA) is the UK's leading umbrella compliance body. Use only FCSA-accredited members. Any umbrella promising "higher take-home pay than standard PAYE" should be treated with extreme caution.
What to look for in an umbrella company
- FCSA or Professional Passport accreditation
- Transparent fee structure: A fixed weekly or monthly fee, with no hidden deductions
- Same-day or next-day payment: Standard for reputable providers
- Full employment rights: Holiday pay, Statutory Sick Pay, pension auto-enrolment
- Responsive customer service: Available by phone and email during business hours
- Clear payslips: Showing all deductions in plain English

Red flags to avoid
- Promised take-home pay significantly above standard PAYE (over 80 to 85% is suspicious)
- Loan arrangements, annuity schemes, or "directors' loans" promoted as tax-efficient
- No published FCSA or Professional Passport accreditation
- Fees deducted from the employer element rather than your pay
- Pressure to sign up quickly without time to review terms
How to switch umbrella companies
Switching is straightforward. Give your current umbrella your notice period (usually two to four weeks), ensure all outstanding expenses are submitted, and confirm your P45 will be issued promptly. Your new umbrella will handle your first payroll from the date you join. You do not need to inform HMRC directly; the umbrella companies handle this through PAYE.
